Sizing guide for titanium bolts, nuts and washers

Use this sizing guide to choose titanium bolts, nuts and washers. Always check thread size, pitch, length, head type and application requirements.

How to read a bolt size

M8 × 1,25 × 25 means a nominal thread diameter of 8 mm, a thread pitch of 1.25 mm and a bolt length of 25 mm. Thread size is not the wrench size.

Measuring thread size and pitch

Measure across the outside of the thread with callipers. Determine the pitch with a thread gauge: this is the distance between two consecutive thread crests. A nut and bolt must have the same diameter and pitch. M10 × 1.25 therefore does not fit M10 × 1.5.

Common standard metric coarse thread pitches
Thread size Nominal diameter Coarse thread pitch
M4 4 mm 0,7 mm
M5 5 mm 0,8 mm
M6 6 mm 1,0 mm
M8 8 mm 1,25 mm
M10 10 mm 1,5 mm
M12 12 mm 1,75 mm

These are general reference sizes, not a list of all TiHex variants. Fine thread pitches also exist. Check the product specifications and the original connection before ordering.

Determining bolt length

For most bolts, measure from the bearing surface under the head to the tip. For countersunk bolts, measure the total length including the head. Allow for the thickness of all parts and washers, sufficient thread engagement and the available depth in a blind hole. A bolt that is too long may bottom out before the parts are clamped.

Which head type do you need?

  • DIN 912 hex socket bolt: cylindrical head with hex socket drive.
  • Low-Profile Torx: low head with Torx drive; check the required space and version.
  • Flange bolt: has a flange under the head; check the bearing surface and head diameter.
  • Countersunk bolt: intended for a matching countersink; also check the head angle and dimensions.

Combining nuts and washers

Choose a nut with the same thread size and pitch as the bolt. For washers, check inner diameter, outer diameter, thickness and shape, and ensure sufficient space on the bearing surface.

For a shaped washer, the same M size is not enough to guarantee compatibility. Check the relevant product page.

Check before installation

Check material, required strength, thread pitch, length and head type. Use the tightening torque and assembly instructions for the specific connection. Do not apply a general steel tightening torque to titanium, and account for the effect of lubricants and threadlockers.

For brakes, suspension, steering and other safety-critical connections, suitability must be technically established in accordance with the vehicle or component manufacturer's requirements.
